Ohio native and summer juniors qualifier Josephine Piliang has sent her verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for the fall of 2027.

Piliang lives in Euclid, Ohio, where she attends the Hathaway Brown School, an all-girls private school in Shaker Heights. At the 2026 OHSAA State Championships, she helped contribute to the team’s Division II state title with one individual and two relay event wins.
At the meet, she won the 100 backstroke in 54.32, a slight add from her lifetime best at the time of 53.94 from the 2024 State Championships. She also swam backstroke on the winning 200 medley relay, splitting 25.43 in finals, and anchored the winning 400 free relay in 51.22. In the individual 100 free, she swam 51.60 to finish 3rd overall.
At the end of March, she swam at the NCSA Spring Championships where she set new personal best times in the 100 back (53.64), 200 back (1:57.77), 50 fly (25.80), and 100 fly (55.41). Her highest event finish at the meet came in the 100 back, where she was 7th overall.

100 Free — 51.19 200 Free — 1:50.47 100 Back — 53.64 200 Back — 1:57.77The University of North Carolina Tar Heels compete in the ACC where they finished 7th at the 2026 Championships with 522.5, just 29.5 points behind Pittsburgh’s 552 in 6th place overall. They went on to finish 24th at the NCAA Championships with 33 points.
Last season, Piliang’s time in the 100 back would have been 4th on the team behind freshman Kamryn Meskill‘s 52.03 in 3rd overall. The top swimmer on the team in the event, Sophia Frei was a junior last season and the 2nd fastest swimmer, Emma Karam, was a senior. Only Meskill will still be there when Piliang arrives on campus.
Piliang also would have been 7th in the 200 back, 8th in the 100 free, and 8th in the 200 free last season.
UNC has not had any Ohio natives on their team since the 2018-2019 season when Zhada Fields was a senior. Piliang will join Best of the Rest recruits Maren Byrne and Sophia Vanyo along with Maddy Boland, Maren Berg, Sloane Barr, and Myra Li.
