Chicago Police Officer John Bartholomew, who was killed in the line of duty last weekend when a gunman opened fire at Swedish Hospital, will be laid to rest next week.
An obituary posted Thursday notes that a visitation for Bartholomew will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday at St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church on North Sheridan Road.
Funeral services will follow starting at 10 a.m. Friday at the same location.
The 38-year-old from Evanston, a father of three, had been on the force a 10-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department when his life was “tragically taken in the line of duty,” his obituary stated.
“John will be remembered as a devoted family man whose life was defined by love, loyalty, and service,” the obituary read. “He was always the first to step in and help others, known for his generosity and willingness to give without hesitation. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures, including his love for good food, his admiration for Batman, and his unmistakable, contagious laugh that could light up any room. He was deeply dedicated to his work as a Chicago police officer, serving his community with honor, integrity, and an unwavering sense of duty. With a strong knowledge of history and a passion for sharing it, John left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.”
The incident unfolded just before 11 a.m. at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital near Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood, at 5140 N. California Ave., as two officers were transporting a person to the hospital for observation, Chicago Police Department Supt. Larry Snelling said during a press conference.
Prosecutors said the suspect smuggled a gun into the hospital, firing shots at both officers before running out of the facility, which was placed on lockdown.
Bartholomew was shot in the head and later pronounced dead. The other officer, 57 years old and a 21-year CPD veteran, remains in critical condition, officials said.
