Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Ildemaro Vargas took no time to extend his hitting streak to 25 games on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers.
In the second inning, Vargas fought off a cutter that jammed him, flaring it to left field for a single. After keeping his hit streak alive in his final at-bat during the eighth inning on Tuesday, Vargas took the drama out of it on Wednesday.
He did not stop, hitting a single to center field in his next at-bat.
With 25 games in a row (dating back to last year), Vargas passed Tony Womack (2000) for the third-longest hitting streak in Diamondbacks history. He is one away from matching Paul Goldschmidt’s 26 games (2013-14) and within shouting distance of Luis Gonzalez’s franchise-record 30 games (1999).

In addition, Vargas extended his road hitting streak to 18 games, which is tied for the franchise record with Stephen Drew (2010) and Junior Spivey (2002).

The last player to accomplish a 25-game hitting streak was Bryan Reynolds of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2024.
Vargas has recorded a hit in all 22 games he has played this season. Only three other players have started a season with this long of a hitting streak:
1976 Ron LeFlore (30 games for the Detroit Tigers) 2006 Edgar Renteria (23 games for the Atlanta Braves) 1971 Joe Torre (22 games for the St. Louis Cardinals)Ildemaro Vargas joins elite company
In the Wild Card Era (1995), there have been 64 hitting streaks of 25 games, about two per year.
The list is a who’s who, with Jimmy Rollins leading at 38 games. Hall of Famers Vladimir Guerrero, David Ortiz, Ichiro, Derek Jeter and Jeff Kent have done it, as have potential future Hall of Famers Albert Pujols, Freddie Freeman, Nolan Arenado and Goldschmidt.
It is a stacked list that Vargas has earned a spot on.
No to get too far ahead, but the Diamondbacks have four more games after Wednesday on their road trip. If Vargas plays in all four and keeps the streak alive, he would have a chance to tie Gonzalez when the Diamondbacks return to Chase Field next Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
There is much work to be done, but a Diamondback has not gotten this close to 30 in over a decade.
