I know what it takes to lead and win tough elections. I spent forty years in elected office serving California through some of the most tumultuous times in our country’s history. I thought I saw it all, but it pales in comparison to the recklessness of Donald Trump’s second presidency and a Republican-led Congress bowing down to his every whim.
Donald Trump has dragged us into another “forever war” without a vote in Congress. Armed and masked ICE agents are inciting danger and terror in our streets. And Republicans are trying to disenfranchise tens of millions of eligible voters, treating the Constitution like a suggestion, instead of the very foundation our country is built on.
I’m not exaggerating when I say flipping the U.S. House of Representatives is essential to protecting the America we know and love. That effort starts here in Southern California, where we have one of the most competitive Congressional races in the country.
We must flip the 48th District.
That’s why who we elect as our Democratic nominee is so critical, but we must choose wisely and strategically. And because I know what it takes to flip this seat, I am backing with the greatest enthusiasm Marni Von Wilpert.
We need a trusted leader, who can not only defeat the Republican nominee but has also never wavered from her values — which are ours. Von Wilpert flipped a Republican-held seat from red to blue on the San Diego City Council.
Her main opponent is Ammar Campa-Najjar who has run unsuccessfully for political office three, yes three, different times and changed his views on core values in every race.
Take healthcare for women; as someone who spent my career fighting for reproductive healthcare, waffling on abortion rights is disqualifying. In 2020, with Roe v. Wade hanging in the balance, Campa-Najjar said “I don’t support legal or illegal abortion.”
Now he expects us to believe that he is pro-choice. In 2018 I supported Campa-Najjar, because in that race he said he was supportive of abortion. After he lost the race, he changed his position.
I didn’t spend my career fighting for abortion rights only to have politicians like him sit back and let Republicans strip us of the freedoms we’ve worked so hard to protect.
To make matters worse, abortion isn’t the only thing Campa-Najjar has tried to fool us on. He said he doesn’t believe in banning “so-called assault weapons” and said he “ran for Congress to work with Trump.” Now he is singing a different tune.
You may be asking yourself why these past comments matter if Campa-Najjar has walked them back now. But this is a window into his character. You don’t betray voters who are counting on you to fight for them.
Von Wilpert has proven that you can win tough elections, even in red districts when you stand up, show courage and are true to your values.
Not only have her values stayed consistent, she’s delivered for her constituents on key issues. She was a fierce advocate for California’s Constitutional amendment to enshrine reproductive healthcare, she has also delivered on affordability, consumer protections and sensible gun laws.
Believe me, I don’t speak out or get involved in primaries lightly, but with so much at stake I know von Wilpert is the strongest candidate we have in this race. Not only can she defeat the Republican nominee, we can trust her to go to Congress to fight for us and fight back against the Trump administration.
If we don’t choose wisely in this primary, we may be stuck with a three-time loser.
As the Cook Political Report put it, Campa-Najjar’s “flip-flopping could hurt him in the general election,” while a leaked GOP memo “pointed to Campa-Najjar as one of a handful of Democratic candidates whom Republicans would prefer to run against in November.”
Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen.
Barbara Boxer represented California in the U.S. Senate from 1993 to 2017.
