ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The City of Rochester Tuesday kicked off a series of public meetings about possible automated traffic enforcement.
The first meeting was held at the Willie Lightfoot R-Center. It’s all part of the city’s Vision Zero initiative.
Organizers said the purpose of the meetings is to give people a chance to learn about automated traffic enforcement methods — like red-light and speed cameras — and share their feedback. Rochester City Councilmember Mitch Gruber told News10NBC there are no plans to bring Rochester’s red-light camera program back as it was.
“That is not what’s under consideration tonight or at any point in the near future,” Gruber said.
The meetings are focused on “identifying what are the challenges for our city right now, the safety challenges and what are some opportunities that other cities have adopted to make streets safer,” Gruber said.
Some proposals include a 25-mile-per-hour speed limit in the future and reviewing options for automated speed reduction.
After the five input sessions, the city will launch an online survey.
