ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Two weeks after News10NBC’s Big Give, volunteers are still sorting through nearly 40,000 pounds of donated food, clothing and hygiene products.
The community collected 35,000 pounds of clothing, 2,500 pounds of hygiene products and 2,000 pounds of nonperishable food.
Big Give, Big Impact
“Going into spring and summer, donations kind of fall down. Families are preparing to travel. People are going on vacation. So the opportunity to give is a lot less. So giving at this time was just perfect,” said Robert Williams, CEO of Open Door Mission.
Volunteers like Cindy Canty have been sorting through the donations since they arrived. Canty said there are “tons and tons” of items still to process, but it’s well worth the labor.
“Someone came in today. She was in a wheelchair and she shopped, and I told her that she can get anything she wanted. And she was just so grateful. She just was, like, so happy and pleased,” Canty said.
Willie Caldwell, another volunteer, who’s currently in the Mission’s recovery program, said the amount of donations exceeded his expectations. “You see both sides of the giving and receiving, donations…This is more than I can imagine,” Caldwell said.
Helping those in need
After sorting, donated clothing is placed in a storefront where anyone can take what they need – free of charge. Jeremiah White, who shopped at the store, said the donations help during a time when clothing prices are high.
“Nowadays, clothes are, like – for pants? It’s $60. You know what I’m saying? T shirts, $30. And I feel like it’s sad that nowadays clothes is very expensive,” White said.
The Open Door Mission has more than 60 people in its shelters who benefited from the Big Give’s donations. Plenty of food, clothing and hygiene products have been distributed outside of the shelter as well.
The Open Door Mission is accepting donations at any time.
