With under a month remaining for many teams on the scholastic spring sports circuit, Helix Charter High squads look toward their championship goals.
In girls’ beach volleyball play, Helix for head coach Isabel Fletes sat at 9-7 overall, 4-0 in league action in the last week.
“We have a few key players this season, but senior Tatum Yturralde and junior Sephia Iciong as our team one pair have been playing outstanding,” Fletes said. “Then sophomores Lili Cruz-Bastien and Savannah Moore have been a solid team four and come out strong with a win when we need it. Both pairs are undefeated in the league so far.”
According to Fletes, the team as of last week was looking to go undefeated in the league and hopefully be in the top bracket of Division I or II for playoffs and win CIF this season.
In track and field competition, both the boys’ and girls’ teams were 5-0 heading into this past week for head coach Rodney Van Sr.
According to Van Sr., some of the key contributors so far this season have been:
Ava Parker, a freshman who competes in the 400 meters (#1 in County – 54.59), 200 meters (#2 in County – 24.62), and relays (4x100R – 48.21, #4 in County & 4x400R – 3:58.79, #4 in County); and Jackson Ellis, a senior in the 400 meters (#2 in County – 47.75) and relays (4x100R – 42.10 & 4x400R – 3:18.07 (Both #1 in County); Tyus Joseph, a senior in the 1600 meters (#9 in County 4:19.13) and 3200 meters (#6 in County 9:19.46); Aiden De Hoyos, a senior in the 300 hurdles (#2 in County – 38.07) and relays (4x100R – 42.10 & 4x400R – 3:18.07 (Both #1 in County); Jeremy Robinson, a sophomore in the 100 meters (#8 in County – 10.85), 200 meters (#12 in County – 22.11), and relays (4x100R – 42.10 & 4x400R – 3:18.07 (Both #1 in County); Tamir Griffith, a sophomore in the 100 meters (#11 in County – 10.88), 200 meters (#11 in County – 22.10), and relays (4x100R – 42.10 & 4x400R – 3:18.07 (Both #1 in County); Dwain Pemberton, a sophomore in the high jump (#5 in County – 6’4″) and triple jump (#27 in County – 41’4″); Kate Weaver, a junior in the 800 (#14 in County – 2:18.45) and 1600 meters (#12 in County – 5:06.69); and Aliyah Bowser, a sophomore in the high jump (#6 in County – 5’3″); and Dajah Herrod, a sophomore, is in the 400M (#16 in County – 58.94), in the high jump (#10 in County – 5’1″), and in the relays (4x100R – 48.21 & 4x400R – 3:58.79).“Our goals for the remainder of the season are to keep improving, compete with consistency, stay healthy, and put ourselves in a strong position for league championships and CIF championships at both the boys’ and girls’ levels,” Van Sr. said.
“Also, we want to send a large number of competitors to the California State Championships. More than anything, we want to continue developing a culture of discipline, accountability, and pride in representing Helix at a high level.”
On the softball diamond, Helix continues to battle for head coach Molly Sturdivant, sporting a 16-1 record going into the week.
According to Sturdivant, some key players include sophomore pitcher Lea Moya. She’s sporting an impressive .44 ERA. She’s pitched 47.1 innings while only giving up three earned runs, with 62 strikeouts, and only 11 walks. Sophomore catcher/shortstop Nikayla Domingo sports a .511 batting average, 1.022 slugging percentage, with three home runs and 22 runs batted in so far this season.
At the freshman level, third baseman Naleia Medina has an impressive .588 batting average. She’s had 20 hits and 13 RBIs.
Fellow freshman utility player Sabrina Ramuno is hitting .459 as a leadoff hitter. She sets the tone for the offense. On defense, she has committed zero errors.
Freshman centerfielder Amara Okafor commands the outfield and can throw people out from deep in the center. She’s sporting a respectable .385 batting average.
In the senior class, shortstop Clarissa Torres has been a steady competitor on defense, making tough plays look easy. She has only committed one error.
“Our focus remains consistent,” Sturdivant said. “We want to keep improving and stay disciplined to give ourselves a chance to make a meaningful run in both league and CIF. Our team has shown glimpses of what we are capable of, and we are excited to continue growing as a program.
“We have a special team this year, and I believe we can go far.”
In the swimming pool, the boys’ team was 3-0 headed into last week.
According to head coach Scott Lemler, key swimmers include senior Jacob Drake. “Jacob continues to improve his para 50 freestyle event,” Lemler said. “He entered the season with a 41.03 and has already crushed through his 40-second ‘wall,’ with his personal best of 38.62. He is on track to represent Helix for the third year at the state level.”
Fellow senior Maverick Balma is the top performer in breaststroke with a season-best of 1:02.62.
Sophomore Kyle Rezende is having another amazing year, dominating the team in the 100 free (49.09), 100 back (56.59), and is a key member of all of the relays.
Junior Luis Andre Arzu Villanueva is dominating the team in 500 free (5:06.47), 100 breast (1:02.00), 200 IM (2:05.47), and is another key member of all of the relays.
Finally, sophomore Mason Torretto leads the team in the 50 free (22.43) and 100 fly (54.72), respectively.
“Our goals for the remainder of the season are to continue performing well in the upcoming dual meets, bring a strong team to CIF, and to continue to the California State Championships,” Lemler added.
