Carson Beck approaching Cardinals tenure with open mind ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

After Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza and Alabama’s Ty Simpson flew off the board within the first 13 selections of the 2026 NFL Draft, 52 picks went by without another quarterback hearing their name called.

With the No. 65 overall pick (third round), the Arizona Cardinals ended the drought by taking Miami quarterback Carson Beck.

The selection drew mixed reactions from across the league, but to Beck, the move mainly meant that the wait to hear his phone buzz was finally over.

“For the call to come (Friday), really, really cool and I’m super blessed for this opportunity,” Beck told reporters after being drafted. “Super, super grateful to be able to come in there and work my tail off.”

Arizona hosted Beck for a top 30 visit prior to the draft, giving the signal caller the chance to meet first-year head coach Mike LaFleur for the first time. The sit down with the young offensive-minded coach in April left an impression that stuck with Beck throughout the draft process.

“Just talking ball with him, you can just tell the football knowledge and obviously, that’s what I love,” Beck said. “I’ve played football for a long time, and being around guys that really understand the game and really care about their guys is really important to me.”

Beck started in 43 games throughout his six-year collegiate career. He started out at Georgia and spent 2023-2024 as the primary starter before transferring to Miami in 2025.

His 3,813 yards and 30 touchdowns to 12 interceptions on 72.4% passing helped the Hurricanes make a run to the national championship, including an outstanding performance at State Farm Stadium in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.

In what would eventually become his future home, Beck flashed what he’s best at, completing 62.2% of his passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns on top of a 3-yard game-winning rushing touchdown.

“That’s the only game I’ve ever played in that stadium and obviously, it’s really a great memory for me and the University of Miami,” Beck said. “Obviously, I’m super stoked and super excited to be able to play in that stadium again.”

Beck is also eager to prove his abilities on picking up the playbook and quickly adapting to a new place weren’t just outliers to his lone season at Miami.

“I think that was a really good year of practice of a transition to a new team,” Beck said. “Being able to have that transition and learn a new team, learn a new offense. Establish myself as a teammate, as a leader, as a friend to the guys around me.

“Being able to go through that last year I think will bode well for me heading into this next year. Really just trying to approach it the same way and be myself whenever I step into the room.”

The Cardinals made Beck the team’s third straight offensive selection in the draft after Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love (No. 3 0verall) and Texas A&M guard Chase Bisontis (No. 34). He’ll also get the chance to practice alongside receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michael Wilson and All-Pro tight end Trey McBride.

Incumbent starter Jacoby Brissett is still expected to be the Week 1 starter despite his absence at the team’s voluntary offseason program due to his ask for a contract extension. Arizona also signed veteran Gardner Minshew with a backup role in mind during free agency.

Beck’s future as a Cardinal heading into the 2026 season is still very much in the to be determined category considering Arizona Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort is taking a wait-and-see approach.

Does Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort see a scenario where QB Carson Beck competes for starting reps in 2026?

“We just announced his name about a half hour ago,” Ossenfort said shortfly after Beck was drafted on Friday. “We just want to get him in the building here and show him where the cafeteria is and the locker room is and and get him fitted for his gear and then we’ll go from there. We’re excited to add, should be great competition in that room and we’ll see how it shakes out.”

A similar sentiment can be seen in Beck’s mindset as he makes the 2,374 mile journey from Miami to Glendale with an open mind and eagerness to take his skills to the next level.

“My whole entire approach to this thing is being myself, being the best player I possibly can be and just trying to take advantage of every single opportunity that I’m given,” Beck said.

“I don’t know what that’ll look like, I’m not sure what’s gonna happen in the future. But I know for sure that I’m gonna step in there and try to take advantage of every opportunity I can and put my best foot forward each and every day.”
