ROCHESTER, N.Y. — More than 150 fourth, fifth and sixth graders from across the Rochester City School District became Circle Champions on Monday.
The students learned how to lead community circles. Those circles facilitate group activities that build community and help to repair relationships that have been damaged.
“We really love when students are the ones who are leading the charge and leading the work and comfortable with the language and the process in terms of the proactive pieces,” said Angelica Matias, lead for the ROC Restorative team. “We’re really just excited to build the capacity of the students so that no matter which school they’re in or which school they end up in within the Rochester City School District, they can take this set of skills with them.”
The community circles are part of an RCSD initiative called “The Restorative Hub.” The hub is led by teachers, social workers and counselors from around the district.
