Fairport manager says new police chief will evaluate resources as village grapples with growing bar district ...Middle East

FAIRPORT, N.Y. — The Village of Fairport has become a weekend destination for nightlife, but has the size of the police force kept up with the growth of the bar district?

There are now about 35 bars and restaurants in the Village of Fairport with a liquor license. “With that growth and with that positivity comes some other mitigating factors that have to be dealt with,” explains Village of Fairport Manager Bryan White.

One concern is safety when the bars let out on the weekends. Early Sunday morning a handful of fights broke out, at least one of which resulted in injuries.

White says the village is considering measures to try and improve safety, “we might start looking at some measures about how we go about mitigating some of those things and being able to, when we have some concerns, we’re able to exercise some things to kind of control certain behaviors or outcomes so, I don’t think anything is off the table at this point and we’ll look into those moving forward,” he tells News10NBC.

Jennifer Lewke (News10NBC):  “Have you had conversations with the bars already and now you’re asking them to do more security-wise?”

Bryan White: “We have, we met 4-6 months ago with all bar owners, we had a meeting with them and law enforcement to really just talk about what are you seeing, what’s going on and how can we assist you.”

The Village Police Department normally has just two officers covering the night shift on weekends.  Both officers were on a call for an EMS worked assaulted when the bars let out over the weekend and the fights started so, Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies were first to the scene.

Jennifer Lewke:  “We know you have some open positions, the chief position has been open for a while as well, how are you working to fill those positions?”

Bryan White:  “We are about to make an appointment for police chief this week, with respect to other police officers in the department there are two vacancies, we’re actively recruiting for that now and also the new chief coming in knows that a top priority for our department recruitment and retention here.”

Jennifer Lewke:  “Are you looking at expanding the police force at all, I know you have vacancies with what you currently have budgeted for but because you’ve become such a destination spot on the weekends are you looking to add positions?

Bryan White:  “Right now, we are staffed for 9 full time officers, I’d like for the new chief to come in and evaluate what the extent of our resources are.”

Jennifer Lewke:  “Have you considered upping the pay to attract more people?”

Bryan White:  “ We have and there are some offers with the current collective bargaining unit as we speak.”

Jennifer Lewke:  “The Sheriff will tell us, “We’re here for everyone all the time” but it may take them longer to get here because of where within the zone so, is that something you’re balancing now?”

Bryan White:  “We’re trying to balance that the best we can, and adding another officer on certain nights may still not mitigate what you’re talking about with respect to vacancies, you still have sick (time), still have vacations and those type of issues and other types of calls.”

Ultimately, the Village Manager says the situation is up for discussion among the mayor, the village board, and the new Police Chief.
