Taking on the over-the-top affectation of a sports announcer, he winkingly introduced their inescapable bubblegum pop smash “Butter”: “Everybody knows this song,” he joked. “The next one spent nearly ten straight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.”
Elsewhere, though, BTS kept it fresh with a revitalized sense of purpose. As most of the seven members reach the end of their twenties (and some approach mid-thirties), they’re striving for artistic expression beyond the K-pop boy band mold — and Saturday night was a bid for recognition as, simply, a band. On top of the distinct shortage of dancing, the group leveled up their conceptual execution, from the eerie traditional instruments that set a somber tone before the concert began to the gorgeous set pieces that took place during costume changes.
