This week in local government features a discussion about whether to have fewer elected officials: the Chapel Hill Town Council is holding a public hearing Wednesday to get residents’ feedback on a proposal to reduce the council’s size and increase the length of the mayoral term. But that’s not the only big-ticket item this week: in Hillsborough, the town board will get a look at proposed new zoning districts, including one that would allow small “corner stores” in residential neighborhoods. And it’s a big week for local schools, as the Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Orange County boards hold budget talks with Orange County Commissioners and the Chatham County school board officially selects a new superintendent.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday, April 27. The board will hear a staff presentation on the process of rewriting the town’s Unified Development Ordinance, with a focus on new zoning districts – including a new provision allowing small-scale “corner stores” in residential neighborhoods. This week’s agenda also includes a proposed commercial development on NC-86 south of Hampton Pointe and a request to cancel plans for a town-owned fiber loop for high-speed internet service. (Town staff say it’s more cost-effective to contract with an existing vendor instead.) Get the full agenda at this link.
The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 29. Tops on this week’s agenda is a public hearing on a proposal to change the makeup of the Town Council – reducing the council’s size from eight members to six, and increasing the mayor’s term from two years to four. Also this week, council members will receive updates on a 30-year transportation plan and planning in the town’s Southern Extraterritorial Jurisdiction, along 15/501 south of Southern Village. Orange County Commissioners meet jointly with the Orange County and Chapel Hill-Carrboro school boards Thursday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building. The three boards will discuss next year’s budget and future capital investment plans, with a look at student performance data. Click here for the full agenda.
Chatham and Durham Counties
The Chatham County school board has scheduled a special meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, April 27, with one purpose: they’ll officially announce the district’s next superintendent to replace Anthony Jackson, who’s retiring in July. Get the full agenda here.
And Durham County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. Monday, April 27, with a lighter agenda that includes a public hearing on a $240 million bond. Get the full agenda here.
