Questions remain after a suspect in Chicago police custody shot two officers, killing one and critically injuring a second on Saturday at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital in the city’s Ravenswood neighborhood.
According to the Chicago Police Department, at around 10:50 a.m., a man in custody was receiving treatment at the hospital for an unrelated incident when he used a firearm to shoot two officers. The officers were rushed to a separate area hospital for treatment, where one was pronounced dead.
As details continue to emerge, here’s what police have released about the incident, the officers and the hospital’s response.
What happened?
Supt. Larry Snelling said the two officers had transported a person to the hospital for observation, and while doing so, the officers were shot.
Snelling declined to provide additional details about what occurred, citing an ongoing investigation.
A manhunt for the suspect ensued following the shooting, with officers swarming the hospital and the nearby area. The suspect was taken into custody around noon, authorities said.
What do we know about the officers involved?
The officer who died was 38 years old and a 10-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, Snelling said. The officer who remains in critical condition is 57 years old and a 21-year veteran of the force.
City, state officials respond
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson
Mayor Brandon Johnson, at a news conference, called on the entire city of Chicago to pray for the officer’s family “and that they heal from this tragedy.”
“Today is a real difficult moment for our city. It’s a tragedy,” Johnson said. “You know, our officers stand in the way of harm every single day, risking their own lives…They have family that expect them to come home. One of our officers will not be able to return to their family.”
Illinois Gov. Pritzker
“Illinois mourns the loss of an officer who was shot and killed at Swedish Hospital. May their memory be a blessing, and may we come together to pray for the critically injured officer’s recovery. Grateful for our first responders who were on the ground.”
40th Ward Ald. Andre Vasquez
“Earlier today, like many of our neighbors, I received the alarming news of a shooting incident at Swedish Hospital here in the 40th Ward, where two police officers were shot.
I went to the scene to better understand what had occurred. Based on what we know at this time, an apprehended suspect involved in a robbery or attempted robbery had been transported to Swedish, following protocol due to concerns for the suspect’s health…”

No team members or patients were physically harmed as a result of this incident. The safety of our patients and team members remains our top priority. We are cooperating with law enforcement during their investigation and our deepest compassion remains with the officers and their families.”
Witnesses share accounts
Vavid Stevens, a resident who lives on the block of the hospital, said he heard “a bunch of commotion going on” and looked out his window to see “more and more police cruisers coming by” his house.
Then, his mom called him, he said. She told him to come outside because she’d “never seen anything like” what was going on.
Stevens said his mom described to him seeing police officers with guns drawn—a sight he said people are not used to seeing in his “quiet” neighborhood.
“It’s horrible to know that something like this happened,” Steven said. “It’s a very grim situation.”
Steven said his mom also expressed concern and fear knowing the suspect ran into the neighborhood and officers were hunting for him with guns drawn.
“There’s countless officers out here at the scene, so that speaks volumes to what happened,” another neighbor said. “I mean, they’re everywhere.”
