This Is the 'Fairy Godmother' Heat Protectant Spray That Hairstylists Swear By ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

If you've ever walked away from your blow dryer with hair that felt fried, crunchy or just inexplicably worse than when you started, there's a very good chance you either skipped your heat protectant entirely or used it wrong.

The hair care market is flooded with options right now—lightweight sprays, rich serums, oil-based formulas, peptide-based formulas; the list goes on and on! A ton of choices is great in theory, but makes choosing genuinely confusing.

To cut through the noise, we talked to four professional hairstylists—Rogerio Cavalcante, founder of Brazil Edition salon; Laurabeth Cabott, celebrity hair artist and owner of Artistry by LB salons in Kansas City, Missouri; T Cooper, professional hairstylist; and Jon Reyman, founder of Goddess Maintenance Co.—about how heat protectants actually work, how to use them correctly and which 11 formulas they personally reach for when they need real results. Plus, we got each of them to reveal their "fairy godmother" pick—the one they'd never style without.

Do Heat Protectant Sprays Actually Protect Your Hair?

The short answer is yes—but they're not magic shields. Cavalcante explains the mechanism simply: heat protectant creates a light barrier around the hair shaft that slows down how quickly heat penetrates the fiber. "So instead of the hair overheating and drying out, it's more controlled," he says, adding that most formulas help lock in moisture at the same time.

Cooper agrees but wants to set realistic expectations: these are buffers, not impenetrable armor. What they do consistently is "reduce moisture loss and minimize damage"—and used religiously, that adds up to meaningfully healthier hair over time.

Cavalcante's method is practical: "Apply it on damp hair before blow-drying, and if you're using hot tools after, you can add a light layer on dry hair too." Distribution is the key, he emphasizes—uneven application means unprotected sections.

Reyman's technique involves working the product through your hands first, then applying from scalp to ends before brushing through for even coverage. And Cooper's finishing move—finger-combing first, then following with a comb—ensures nothing gets missed.

Can Heat Protectant Prevent Split Ends and Breakage?

Yes, and the long-term payoff is real. "It does both,” Cavalcante says. “It protects in the moment, but over time it really helps reduce breakage and split ends because the hair isn't constantly being stressed by heat."

Cooper adds that using the wrong product can actually make things worse. "The wrong protectant can leave the hair greasy or not protected enough," she says, which is why reading the formula type (spray, serum, oil, cream) matters as much as the ingredient list.

Cabott takes a lifestyle-first approach to the question: "It's all up to what best suits you. If you love something quick and easy, I suggest a dry spray. If you are just using a blow dryer for a blowout, I suggest a leave-in that is made for wet hair." The best formula is one you'll actually use every time.

"It just makes the hair look expensive instantly," he says. T Cooper agrees, recommending it specifically for anyone chasing that high-gloss, glass-hair finish "without feeling greasy."

Cabott's pick for thick hair, and it makes sense. Dense, coarse hair needs a formula with staying power—something that won't evaporate at the first pass of the dryer. K-18's formula is rich and multi-benefit, protecting and moisturizing simultaneously, which means thick hair comes out softer and more controlled rather than just heat-proofed.

Best for Curly Hair: Pattern Beauty Heat Protectant, $22

"This formula hydrates and defines curls while protecting against heat damage," she explains—so you're not sacrificing your curl pattern to achieve a styled look.

"When hair is already compromised, you can't afford to skip protection," he says. "BioTech Blowout doesn't just prevent damaged strands from further heat stress, it actively works to rebuild strength." For anyone coming off bleaching, chemical treatments or years of heat styling, that's a meaningful difference.

Best Anti-Frizz: Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray, $30

Both Cavalcante and Cooper land on this one independently, which says a lot. The Dream Coat has become a cult classic for a specific reason: it seals the cuticle and blocks out humidity in a way that keeps blowouts polished through conditions that would otherwise destroy them. "It protects from heat, seals the cuticle, and blocks humidity to keep your style polished," Cooper tells Parade.

Best for Blow-Drying: Davines OI Milk, $36

Cabott's go-to for clients who are specifically doing a blowout on wet hair—and it earns its place by making the whole process easier. Designed as a leave-in for damp hair, it protects from the first pass of the dryer while adding the kind of softness and slip that makes brushing through a breeze. It's the kind of product that makes a blowout feel less laborious and the results look more polished.

Best for Flat Irons: GHD Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray, $21

Flat irons operate at some of the highest temperatures in your styling toolkit, which means the protection needs to be specifically calibrated for that kind of sustained, direct heat. Cavalcante recommends this one for exactly that reason—it's engineered to hold up under the heat levels flat irons actually reach, delivering reliable protection rather than just checking a box.

Best Hydrating: Aveda Heat Relief Thermal Protector and Conditioning Mist, $40

Cooper's pick for anyone whose hair feels dry, dull or thirsty after styling. Beyond the heat protection, this formula delivers real moisture—shine, softness and hydration rather than just a barrier—which makes it particularly useful for anyone dealing with hair that's been stripped by repeated coloring or environmental damage.

Best Shine-Boosting: IGK Good Behavior Spirulina Protein Smoothing Spray, $34

Cavalcante specifically chose this for anyone chasing that glass-hair, high-gloss finish—what he describes as a "glossy, glass-hair effect with added smoothing." The spirulina protein in the formula strengthens while it smooths, so you're getting heat protection, shine and structural support in a single step. If you want your styling to look like you did something extra, this is the formula that creates that impression.
