The Denver Broncos have consistently said this offseason that they are always looking to upgrade in the trenches. After initially trading back from the 62nd overall pick, the Broncos beefed up their defensive line after John Franklin-Myer’s departure, selecting Texas A&M defensive lineman Tyler Onyedim.

Onyedim is 6-foot-4, 290 pounds, and is viewed as a versatile defensive lineman who can play defensive end and defensive tackle, giving the Broncos a two-way player in the trenches.

Initially, he played four years at Iowa State and was teammates with Eyioma Uwazurike. His last year in college, he played at Texas A&M, where he finished the year with 48 tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, and one forced fumble.

He’s also been a durable player, appearing in 53 games over five years.

This may not be a flashy pick in the eyes of fans in Broncos Country — especially those who were hoping for a tight end, running back, and linebacker.

Onyedim has a chance to jump into the defensive line rotation as a rookie and could be a tandem alongside Sai’vion Jones, who was a third-round pick for the Broncos last season.

In a conference call with us moments after he was drafted, Onyedim talked about what he can bring to the table for Denver defensively.

“I feel like I’m a versatile player,” Onyedim said. “I can play anywhere on the defensive line. I feel like my get-off is really good, I have a really good first step. I feel like I’m a true d-lineman. When you hear defensive lineman, you probably think about defensive tackle and defensive end. I’m a true d-lineman, that’s me.”

We’ll hear from Broncos general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton once the third round officially concludes.
