ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Beechwood neighbors woke up to the city installing 51 concrete pillars along Grand Avenue.
News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke with neighbors about their concerns. The city installed 46 bollards lining the park’s south side and an additional five along the east side. Some neighbors said there’s a lot of traffic that drives up onto the sidewalk there and they’re concerned about safety.
“Kids, they ride ATVs in through here. So, riding into that — even with a bike, they can ride into that. If a car could come crashing into it. There are a lot of things, but I really want to know what was the reason? Why did you put them here?” Sheree N said.
Neighbors also questioned why the bollards were installed without any advance notice. Rosetta McLean said she would have liked to see communication from the city before the installation.
“Someone from the city notifying at least the people that live directly in front of the park. So we’d at least have a say on what’s going on in our neighborhood,” McLean said.
When asked what form of communication would have been best, McLean said it could be a flier, an email or someone knocking on the door. She said a phone call or someone stopping by to say they’re about to install the bollards in front of her house would have been helpful.
News10NBC reached out to the city for more information on the bollards. The city referred News10NBC to the president of the Beechwood Neighborhood Coalition and said the coalition recommended the city install them.
Mahon sent an email to the president asking about the planning process and reason for the installation. There’s no phone number listed to contact, so News10NBC will continue to follow up until it gets a response. The Beechwood Neighborhood Coalition is a volunteer group that works to enhance the area. News10NBC looked on its Facebook page and website for information on the bollards but did not find anything.
