Proposed legislation would let SNAP recipients buy hot rotisserie chickens

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Proposed federal legislation would let people using SNAP benefits buy hot rotisserie chicken at grocery stores.

News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic spoke with local senators and shoppers about the Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act. The bill would change the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 to add only hot rotisserie chicken to eligible purchases.

Local senators say it’s a step forward but not enough. “Both the federal and the state’s role is to make sure that food insecure families, families who are unable to put food on table for whatever reason, we want to make sure that they have regular and consistent access to fresh and healthy foods, whether it be chicken or fresh vegetables or fruits,” Sen. Jeremy Cooney said.

About 42 million Americans use SNAP nationwide. In Monroe County, more than 100,000 people across 62,000 households rely on the food assistance.

Rotisserie chickens typically cost around $5 to $7. Badzic bought one from Tops for $7.99, or $8.63 with tax.

Adelisa talked with a handful of shoppers who all said they believe SNAP should cover hot rotisserie chickens. “Definitely is healthier than some of the processed foods that we get. I think they definitely should. Why not? It makes it easier on the folks that are going home. They don’t have to cook, wider variety of healthier foods,” said Richard Palermo, a supporter of the bill.

Adelisa reached out to Congressman Joe Morelle’s office. While he doesn’t co-sponsor the Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act, he does co-sponsor the Hot Foods Act of 2025, which would expand SNAP eligibility to all hot and ready-to-eat foods. He says the Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act is a step in the right direction.

She also reached out to Claudia Tenney’s office but hadn’t heard back. Kirsten Gillibrand’s office said she wasn’t available.

The bill would not increase funding or SNAP participant eligibility. It also only applies to eligible retailers and would not expand SNAP to restaurants.
