Since the US launched its assault on Iran, we have seen flashes of grit from the Prime Minister and others here, as they justify staying out of a misjudged conflict. “I’m here to make the right decisions for the British people,” said the Prime Minister after Trump’s most recent criticism of his performance. Thank goodness – but those words are tame, especially against the backdrop of the cringe-making obsequiousness we have seen from Starmer previously.
The simple fact of the matter is that Ukraine has been the subject of a brutal, outrageous invasion by an aggressor power. The US offered security guarantees to Ukraine at the end of the Cold War, as part of the deal which saw Ukraine give up its nuclear weapons – yet it has done far too little to uphold those guarantees.
Since Trump’s return to power at the start of last year, the White House has seemed far keener on cosying up to Russian President Vladimir Putin than aiding the desperate people of Ukraine – either by supporting their defence or bringing the war to an end on terms that are acceptable to the innocent party.
Harry has used his profile to remind the world of this reality. You do not have to agree with him on everything – but on this, the black sheep of the Royal Family surely speaks for us all.
