CALEDONIA-MUMFORD, N.Y. (WHEC) — Mia Wilson may be soft-spoken, but she’s a big-time player for Cal-Mum softball, starting on varsity for the past four seasons.
“That was a really big step up and something that really made me want to focus on softball entirely,” Wilson said.
Over the years, Wilson has grown into a leader on the field, showing the whole team exactly how to carry themselves as Raiders. News10NBC spoke with Wilson about her role as a captain and a leader.
Mia Wilson scholar athlete of the weekMia Wilson scholar athlete of the week“I think when we started getting a lot of younger, newer girls who needed more direction, they needed someone to look up to. And that’s when you need to start leading by example and showing them how to act,” Wilson said.
Even though she’s a captain of this team, it’s going to be the end of the road for her competitive softball career. After this season’s done, she’s not continuing in college.
For Wilson, it’s all about soaking in all of these memories and looking to complete a very specific goal.
“I think we have the best chance for this team of winning Sectionals. I really want my team to do that and have a lot of confidence that we can and have the abilities to if we practice and put in the work,” Wilson said.
Of course, Mia Wilson has the blueprint.
“Once we get into the games we always try not to have a big ego. We are a good team, but we know we need to stay focused and practice our fundamentals that we learn each day,” Wilson said.
If the rest of the 6-0 Raiders follow suit, a Sectionals brick could be very realistic. Wilson was named the latest News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week.
