I like Caleb Thielbar quite a bit. He was great for the Cubs last season and has been good so far here in 2025. But frankly, it’s a little ridiculous that he has become the team’s highest leverage reliever here on April 23. That’s just what happens when you have, oh, 300 pitchers on the injured list: Cade Horton/Justin Steele (because it pulls in Colin Rea), Phil Maton, Hunter Harvey, Daniel Palencia, Ethan Roberts, and Porter Hodge. And there are others.
But the problem may have just gotten a lot worse, because today, after blowing a save in the top of the ninth inning at Wrigley Field, Caleb Thielbar came up limping after a pitch and immediately left the game with a Cubs trainer.
We obviously do not yet know what was hurt – or how badly – but it did look like a lower body/leg/hamstring injury. That’s just my speculation, though. I’m sure we’ll learn more soon and I will update this post when we do.
But in the meantime, YIKES. The Cubs bullpen is barely stitched together at this point. And Thielbar was the only truly trustworthy and veteran arm this side of Hoby Milner. That’s going to be a problem.
For now, Riley Martin has come into the game. We’ll update this post when more information is available.
