For 13 years the American Booksellers Association has provided me one Saturday in April when it’s not just probable I’ll end up browsing a local bookstore, it’s imperative. Indie Bookstore Day, an unofficial national holiday, is a day for independent booksellers to show off their shelves by offering discounts, dance parties, prizes, pencils, cupcakes — really whatever they want to get people in the doors and connecting with neighbors over their next favorite read.
Below you’ll find some of the standout bookstore events, as well as a Colorado-focused music festival, Mile High Asian Food Week and a Bigfoot festival in Estes Park.
April 23-29
Indie Bookstore Day. In Denver, take your pick from local authors at Westside Books, storewide sales at Second Star to the Right, or tarot readings and custom cocktails at Denver Book Society. In the always interesting Shop at Matter you’ll find printmaking, zine crafting, dancing and poetry reading throughout the day, along with a rotating schedule of genre-specific discounts.
In Fort Collins, Old Firehouse Books is offering snacks, tea and prizes during a very kid-friendly celebration. The fine folks down the street at Perelandra Bookshop will be busy hosting the FoCoMX Music Festival (more on that below), but if you stop by Sunday you’ll find the Yart Sale in full swing, a marketplace of Fort Collins artists and makers slinging handmade goods for $30 or less.
Narrow Gauge Book Co-op in Alamosa has been celebrating since Monday with a bookish spirit week, culminating in a poetry reading and spoken word open mic Saturday night.
You’ll find games, prizes and discounts at Curioser Books in Montrose, and some lucky person will snag a LibroFM golden ticket at White River Books in Carbondale (find it for 12 free audiobook credits). If you’re somewhere between those towns, don’t pass up the delightful Paonia Books in downtown Paonia.
There are dozens more events around the state, check out this map to decide which local shop you’ll support and celebrate with this weekend.
