Billy Donovan has parted ways with the Chicago Bulls, and just like that, another NBA franchise is in the market for a new head coach.
Now, Chicago is looking for a lot more than just a coach, but they’ve officially joined the Milwaukee Bucks and the Golden State Warriors as the NBA teams searching for one. And trust me, more openings are coming, this could turn into full-on open season across the league.

Heading into next season, there are really two versions of this job, one with Giannis Antetokounmpo, and one without.
With Giannis, you’re looking at a playoff contender. It’s simple, any team with a top-five player has a chance. But that also comes with constant outside noise, whether he’s on the floor or not. Fair or not, it’s a real factor a coach would have to deal with.
Without him? The outlook gets a lot murkier.
The most intriguing young piece is Ryan Rollins, coming off a breakout year at 23. But beyond that, the Bucks are short on assets and flexibility. Even if they land the No. 1 pick, it could be swapped depending on where the New Orleans Pelicans land.

After 12 seasons with the Golden State Warriors, it looks like the curtain may have finally closed on Steve Kerr’s Hall of Fame run in the Bay Area, following a 10th-place finish in the West. Now, without him, Mike Dunleavy Jr. still has to figure out how to maximize an aging core that’s trying to contend.
Compared to the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State is in a slightly better spot. You still have Stephen Curry, and that alone keeps the window cracked open. But the rest of the roster feels like a mix of pieces that might’ve been perfect a decade ago.
Veterans like Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, Kristaps Porziņģis, and Al Horford bring experience, but also raise questions about timeline and durability. Meanwhile, younger players like Brandin Podziemski, Gui Santos, and Will Richard have shown promise, but aren’t proven enough to fully carry the next era just yet.

Once Artūras Karnišovas and Marc Eversley were let go by the Chicago Bulls, Billy Donovan wanting out felt inevitable. Even with the Reinsdorf family doing everything they could to keep him, the writing was on the wall.
Now, with Donovan gone, the Bulls’ search really starts at the top, rebuilding the front office before locking in their next head coach. But for all the uncertainty, there is some real intrigue with this job.
You’re looking at a fresh slate. Roughly $65 million in cap space. Control of their own future. A small collection of assets. And a couple of young, intriguing players in Matas Buzelis and Josh Giddey who still have room to grow.

This one feels like a guaranteed opening, but honestly, where’s the allure?
The Portland Trail Blazers have actually outperformed expectations, yet the situation around the team is raising serious concerns. New owner Tom Dundon is quickly building a reputation for aggressive cost-cutting, and not in areas you’d expect.
If there’s one place you don’t cut corners, it’s your head coach.
After Chauncey Billups was suspended amid an FBI investigation, Tiago Splitter stepped in as interim and led Portland to its first playoff appearance since 2021. They’re currently battling in a tied series, and yet, there’s still no commitment to him long-term.
Instead, reports suggest Dundon is searching for a cheaper option.

If I wrote this right after Orlando’s first play-in game, I would’ve guaranteed that Jamahl Mosley was on his way out the moment the season ended. But since then, everything’s changed.
The Orlando Magic not only won their second play-in game, they followed it up with a Game 1 win over the Detroit Pistons as an 8-seed vs. 1-seed matchup. If Orlando finds a way to get out of the first round, Mosley might’ve done enough to save his job, especially considering this was a disappointing and injury-hit season.

These two situations feel like complete coin flips, and it all depends on how the playoffs shake out.
The Houston Rockets are down 0–2 to a shorthanded Los Angeles Lakers team, despite being favored in both games. Ime Udoka has been outcoached so far by J. J. Redick, who’s only in his second playoff run as a head coach.
