Interim boss David Wright is delighted with the improvement his Ipswich Town side have shown after they took a major step towards securing their Women’s Super League 2 status for next season.
Town were bottom of the table on five points when Joe Sheehan stepped down from the role in January, having managed only one win in their first 11 games.
But Wednesday’s 4-1 victory over Sheffield United, which ended a run of three defeats in a row, left them 10th, three points clear of bottom club Portsmouth with just two games to go.
After Kenzie Weir put them ahead in first-half added time with a header, Sophie Peskett scored twice, either side of a goal from Maria Boswell.
“Our performance level in the last number of weeks has been really good, we just haven’t quite been able to finish it off,” Wright told the club website., external
“I’m so happy with them getting into those (forward) areas and executing what we’ve been practising.
“The hardest thing in football is to score goals. We’ve done a lot of work and thankfully it all came together. If we were being a bit greedy, which there’s nothing wrong with, we could have got a couple more.”
Ipswich were promoted from the third tier of women’s football last season, and their survival battle could go down to the final day of the season.
They travel to leaders Birmingham City on Saturday, while Portsmouth and next-to-bottom Durham are at home to Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United respectively.
However, if Wright’s side manage at least a point against Birmingham and Portsmouth lose, they would be safe.
