ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester City Council voted on Tuesday night to hire two outside law firms to help with an appeal aimed at reinstating the Police Accountability Board’s investigatory powers.
Every council member voted to retain outside legal counsel to appeal the March court ruling that stripped the PAB’s ability to investigate the city’s police department. It comes after years of legal challenges to the PAB’s authority, which was created after a 2019 referendum.
After the court ruling, six PAB staff members were laid off. Supporters of the PAB rallied outside of Rochester City Hall the morning before the city council meeting, saying the court ruling is an attempt to dismantle what the community voted for.
At the meeting, council member Stanley Martin said she’s glad that others are standing by the PAB.
“I’m really proud of this body uniting to fight to restore PAB’s investigatory powers, so I’m very happy to be signing this and moving this forward,” Councilmember Stanley Martin said.
The two law firms will work together to represent the PAB in different courts.
