In fact, it takes a good half of the story to really get into the romance of it all. While Dot is involved with someone at the beginning, she knows it’s not going anywhere, and so, I don’t really count that as the romance part. Mary seems to have it figured out, but she’s also willing to make a huge move. The stars align when they’re offered the chance to move out of New York City to Cedar Falls, Wisconsin for a few months.
It’s the friendship that is the soul of this story. We get to see what it means to have friends who support each other, and I’d have been happy to have remained focused on that. One of my small complaints was that the trio didn’t seem to have enough time to showcase the close friendship that they had — close enough to move to another state on almost a whim!
