ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Earth Day is Wednesday, and now is the time to recycle your e-waste.

Not only is recycling good for the planet, it can also be good for your wallet. CNET, who write about all things tech, decided to take a look at what we all do with our old tech, and what they learned was eye-opening.

According to a recent CNET survey, only 39% of Americans recycle their discarded cell phones, tablets, TVs and tech toys.

“But the other piece of that that’s really important is that 22 percent of U.S. adults throw them in the trash, and that can be illegal in some states,” said Dashia Milden, a consumer insights editor at CNET.

About half the states in the country, including New York, have laws against throwing electronics in the trash. When old e-waste ends up in landfills, it releases toxins like lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic that can leach into the environment, causing everything from cancer to cognitive damage.

Then there are those who throw nothing away. 29% are hoarding old tech in their homes.

“Number one is Swappa. CNET highly recommends Swappa as a safe way to sell your electronics,” Milden said.

Swappa oversees the sale and charges you 3%. Want to skip the hassle of selling your old tech?

“So Apple, Best Buy, Staples, Target, Amazon — the list goes on. So those are just a couple of stores that will offer rewards or discounts,” Milden said.

When you trade in the old, you get a discount on something new. We have a number of options in the Rochester area to recycle your e-waste. The Ecopark, Sunnking, Maven Technologies and Regional Computer Recycling and Recovery are among them.
