Police are investigating two incidents where young teens reported being harassed for their religion at parks in north suburbs of Chicago.
Skokie police said the groups of kids involved in these incidents were not the same, however, both incidents involved anti-Semitic language or comments where people’s national origin or religious identity was questioned.
On Friday evening, police responded to Lorel Park, located at 8135 Lorel Ave. in Skokie, for a report of an altercation involving a small group of young girls. Authorities said it was reported that during the altercation one group of girls questioned the religious identities and national origins of another group of girls. The group also threw woodchips at them and pulled their hair, authorities said, and one of the girls was struck on her leg.
On Saturday afternoon, police were notified about an incident at Central Park, located at 9350 Central Park Ave. in Evanston, involving pre-teen and early teen kids playing basketball. Police said three Jewish kids reported that the opposing team used anti-Semitic language during the course of the game. The situation escalated, police said, and one kid reported being punched and his necklace damaged.
Skokie police are investigating both incidents.
Police have been in contact with all of the kids involved in the Lorel Park incident and are in the process of identifying those involved in the Central Park incident.
