ROCHESTER, N.Y. — National Work Zone Awareness Week begins on Monday, highlighting a growing safety concern on American roads.
In 2023, nearly 900 people died in work zones across the country. Most of those killed were drivers and their passengers, not highway workers or people outside their cars. These statistics can also be found by clicking here.
Triple A says drivers may be distracted when they fail to slow down and move over. Plenty of road work is happening on local roads right now that drivers need to watch out for.
“When the sun’s out, the cones start coming out, whether it be workers fixing road, people trying to help. We want to get home to our families. We do appreciate when people slow down, move over,” said Jeff Sgarlata, Fleeters Supervisor.
Triple A emphasizes drivers should stay alert, get off their phones and watch for emergency vehicles.
