Virgil van Dijk scored the third-latest winning goal on record in the Premier League (since 2006-07) to earn Liverpool victory in the first Merseyside derby at Everton’s new stadium.
The game had been drifting towards a stalemate after goals from Mohamed Salah and Beto, but deep into second-half injury time, the Liverpool captain headed Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner into the net to earn a rare away win in this fixture.
The win takes Liverpool seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification with only five games remaining. The Opta supercomputer now rates their chances of a top-five finish at 89.2%.
They had taken a long time to get going, though. Liverpool failed to have a single shot in the first 20 minutes of the match, and when they eventually did, it was a long-range effort from Cody Gakpo that was easily blocked by a defender.
They were given a big wake-up call when Iliman Ndiaye brought Jake O’Brien’s cross down and fired into the net, only for the VAR to spot an offside in the build-up and rule the goal out. It was a massive let-off for the visitors.
Liverpool had needed to be jolted into action, and Ndiaye’s ‘goal’ did the job. The momentum of the game shifted almost instantaneously; just 66 seconds after the goal had been disallowed, Salah put Liverpool in front.

— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) April 19, 2026Everton were caught in possession trying to play out from the back, with Dwight McNeil’s poorly weighted pass finding only Gakpo. The Dutch international looked up and immediately spotted Salah in space on the right and fed a perfect ball through to the Egyptian, who made no mistake with his first-time finish. In the blink of an eye, Liverpool had gone from thinking they had gone behind to leading.
In his final Merseyside derby, it was Salah’s ninth goal in the fixture in the Premier League. Nobody has scored more such goals than him (level with Steven Gerrard – also nine).
It also meant Salah has now scored nine goals past Jordan Pickford in the Premier League, with only Harry Kane having scored more against him (14).
Liverpool had been given a huge confidence boost and their nerves were settled. They saw out the rest of the first half with a swagger that had been missing in the early stages of the game.
It suddenly looked like a difficult game for Everton to get back into, but they equalised out of nowhere after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall chased down a long ball, and under little pressure played a ball across the face of goal. Beto stretched out a toe to turn the cross into the net.
In doing so, the forward became the first Everton player to score in both of their first two home appearances against Liverpool in the Premier League. He has also now scored in three or more consecutive Premier League appearances for just the second time, after a run of four in a row in February 2025, which also included a goal at home to Liverpool.
Liverpool’s disappointment was compounded by an injury to goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was only playing because their first-choice stopper, Alisson, is also out. He was stretchered off the pitch, and Freddie Woodman was introduced to become the sixth player to make his Premier League debut for Liverpool in a Merseyside derby, and the second goalkeeper, after Chris Kirkland in February 2002.
Everton had the momentum and were up against a goalkeeper making only his fifth ever appearance in the competition. However, there was to be no further joy for the hosts, who failed to put the inexperienced Woodman under much pressure at all, and they would go on to concede at the death in a blow to their own aspirations of qualifying for Europe. Van Dijk’s goal was clocked at 99:53, making it the joint-eighth-latest goal on record in the Premier League.
They have now scored six 90th-minute winners against Everton in the Premier League – the most one side has against a single opponent in the competition’s history.
Qualifying for the Champions League is an absolute must if Liverpool are to rescue anything from a disappointing season, and with this win, thanks to that very, very late strike, they took a huge step towards achieving that goal.
