POINT LOMA – With an overall record of 11-3, Point Loma’s boys lacrosse team is a Div. I top 10 team as the CIF playoffs near — and they are hungry for another championship.
Head coach Deron Ambler, now in his fourth year at PLHS (14th overall), led the school to its first CIF Div. II championship in 2024 and earned his 150th career win last year.
The 2026 edition of the team is young, with Ambler listing 20 juniors and only four seniors on his roster.
Two of those seniors, midfielder Carson Allen and attacker Keagan Deschenes, are mainstays who have committed to play at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho.
In addition, Ambler named junior defenders Ryan Cleator, Van Dominy, Brody Oliviera, and goalkeeper Ash Hornyak as key players.
The team was tested last week during a Western League game when, after building a 4-0 lead against University City, the pesky Centurions came back to tie the game 7-7 late in the final quarter. But Pointer Jason DuCharme scored quickly in the overtime period for an 8-7 win to keep Point Loma perched atop league standings.

“This has been a really great year,” Ambler said. “We have a very strong defense, but we’re pretty well balanced on offense also.”
That offense has outscored opponents 147-73, a plus-74 differential.
Point Loma’s lacrosse teams have benefited from a strong youth program, sending experienced players to the prep level, with some beginning as early as age five.
The Pointers have one remaining home game before the playoffs begin early next month.
