LYONS, N.Y. — A Lyons man is facing new charges after Wayne County sheriff’s deputies say he tried to bribe and threaten a witness while in jail on rape charges.
Deputies say Matthew Hagar, 37, used the jail phone and worked with others to contact the victim in the case. The sheriff’s office began investigating in October, and a grand jury indicted him on the new charges late last month.
Hagar is charged with attempted bribery of a witness, conspiracy to commit criminal solicitation, contempt, conspiracy to tamper with a witness, and criminal solicitation. Before the new charges, he was already being held in Wayne County jail without bail.
