The aviation industry continues to face workforce shortages, and a new initiative is hoping to play a critical role in expanding access to Chicago students.
Atlantic Aviation, in partnership with Barrington Irving Technical Training School, is providing Morgan Park High School students with hands-on exposure to aviation careers, including fixed base operations, maintenance, repair, and overhaul along with access to training opportunities and potential summer internships.
“It is an industry that we need talent, we need exposure,” said Jeff Foland, CEO of Atlantic Aviation. “So many of our young students see an aircraft flying across the sky, and they don’t realize how much goes into running an operation and a business. We are proud to partner with Captain Irving, Chicago Public Schools and the city of Chicago to help build a stronger, more inclusive future for our industry.”
The goal of the new program is to provide students with career opportunities, taking advantage of the access afforded to residents located near one of the nation’s busiest aviation corridors.
“We focus on Morgan Park High School because they are right next to Midway,” Captain Barrington Irving said. “We want them to have opportunities and internships, we want them to have access to see what takes place inside of this airport and career pathways available to them.”
Charlatta McDonald, a teacher at the school, said that another goal of the program is to show that aviation isn’t just about flying the planes, but about everything going into the flight of a plane.
“We have future pilots, engineers, doctors, lawyers, sitting in our midst and for them to see that aviation is not just about flying planes is amazing,” McDonald said.
