After breezing to a win on Tuesday, the Iowa Cubs dropped their matchup on Wednesday largely due to pitching struggles. The opposite was the case for Knoxville, which bounced back from a 5-1 loss with a dominant win. South Bend and Myrtle Beach also picked up wins on Wednesday. Let’s recap the action from the farm.
Cubs Prospects Report | April 16, 2026
Triple-A Iowa Cubs
Things started out all right for the Cubs in their 9-4 loss to the Clippers on Wednesday, but unfortunately, the wheels fell off in the middle frames. Iowa jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on RBI singles from Ben Cowles and Casey Optiz, plus an RBI double from Justin Dean. In the top of the fourth, they added another run on an Optiz bunt. But with a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, Columbus came storming back.
Home runs in the fourth and fifth innings off Paul Campbell and Collin Snider made it a 4-3 game in a hurry. Then, in the sixth, an Optiz throwing error allowed the Clippers to tie the game at four. Following that, the Clippers jumped ahead on a three-run blast to make it 7-4. Columbus would add two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 9-4 lead, which ended up as the final score.

Double-A Knoxville Smokies
After struggling at the plate on Tuesday, the bats broke out on Wednesday. Combine that with a dominant combined pitching effort, and that’s a pretty good formula for a win!
The Smokies got the bats going in the second inning with a four-run effort. First, an Ethan Hearn double scored a pair, then an Alex Ramirez single brought in two more. The Smokies then added three more runs – one in the fifth and two in the seventh – on two walks and one hit-by-pitch to increase the lead to 7-0. A Miguel Useche solo homer in the eighth made it 8-0 which is how the game ended.
On the mound, Yenrri Rojas got the start. He went 3.1 innings and allowed just one hit, but he also issued four walks. Following him, Jace Beck, Evan Taylor, and Marino Santy finished off the shutout, combining for eight strikeouts, two walks, and five hits over the remaining frames.

South Bend bounced back from a rough start on Wednesday to pick up a 9-5 win over Beloit on Wednesday. Beloit put up a three-spot to start the game in the top of the first off Kevin Valdez, making it 3-0 before South Bend even stepped up to the plate. The Cubs rebounded, though, up two themselves on a Leonel Espinoza triple and a Kane Kepley groundout. In the second and third, the Cubs would add two more runs on a double from Christian Olivo and a single from Cam Sisneros.
Just like that, South Bend held a 4-3 lead, but it was a short-lived one. Beloit put up two more runs in the top of the fourth, grabbing a 5-4 advantage. However, in the bottom of the fourth, the Cubs took the lead back for good on a Kane Kepley two-RBI single.
South Bend would go on to add three more runs on a Kade Snell sacrifice fly and home runs from Sisneros and Owen Ayers en route to a 9-5 win.

Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Pelicans played the lone game of the day that included some late-inning drama as they picked up a 5-4 extra-innings win over Kannapolis. Cole Mathis started the scoring with a two-run blast in the bottom of the first. Kannapolis tied the game with a pair of runs in the third, but it was Cole Mathis again giving Myrtle Beach the lead right back in the bottom half with another two-run homer.
The Cannon Ballers didn’t go away, though. They cut the lead to 4-3 with a run in the fourth, then tied the game up in the eighth. We went to extras tied 4-4, where Ben Johnson (who apparently moonlights as a Cubs minor league reliever in the Bears’ offseason) kept Kannapolis off the board in the top half. In the bottom of the 10th, Jose Escobar walked it off with an RBI single.
