Good Question: How does the Red Cross help people who lose their homes in fires?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — When a fire destroys a home, the Red Cross often steps in to help people get back on their feet. For example, after a fire on Parsells Avenue displaced eight people last week, the Red Cross helped them out.

So, where do people stay when the Red Cross is helping them? News10NBC’s Emily Putnam looked into it. Julianna Stella, a senior disaster program manager with the Red Cross covering 27 counties in Western New York, explained how they help families.

“The first thing we do is we collect a little bit of information from them. We open a case, a Red Cross case, and then we will just make sure that they have the next couple of days figured out,” Stella said.

Housing, food, and clothing come first. If the person who lost their home doesn’t have someone to stay with, the Red Cross helps them pay for a hotel room. The amount of financial support depends on the size of the family.

“We give the funding to the family and we want them to have the autonomy to decide where they stay and what they do with the money,” Stella said.

The Red Cross will keep its case open for 30 days. During that time, families meet with recovery workers.

“That can be anything from working with how to work with your insurance, what your housing situation is going to look like moving forward, if you need documentation for your employer that this has happened,” Stella said.

They also have people ready to offer health, mental health, and spiritual care.

“If there’s any lost medication, eyeglasses, durable medical equipment, anything like that… we have a team of nurses that will work with them and pharmacies and doctors to help get that replaced,” Stella said. “And if there’s any emotional or spiritual counseling that they need after something like this happens, we can provide that as well.”

The Red Cross responds to about 1,800 cases across Western New York every year. Roughly 30 percent of those are in Rochester. When a case closes after 30 days, the Red Cross will connect the person with community partners in Rochester for longer-term solutions.

“On average, it takes about two years, either emotionally, financially, things like that, to recover from a home fire,” Stella said.
