Day 87 of the Chicago Bears offseason. OMG! We got a new Spaceballs trailer before we got GTA 6:

HEADS UP! Patrick, Matt, and I are recording a new episode of The BN Bears Podcast later this morning. I know it’s last-minute, but if you have ANY questions, we’d love to answer them on the pod. You can leave your questions in the replies to this post on BlueSky, this one on Twitter, or this one on Facebook. Can you believe we are one week away from the 2026 NFL Draft? The pre-draft process has been a journey. We’ve crammed our eyeballs with player profiles, highlight clips, prospect think pieces, and so much more. It is finally time to bear down and share all of our knowledge with you as we do our best to solve the puzzle that is the Bears’ draft plans. Have you checked out the Bleacher Nation Mock Draft Simulator? If not, then you should change that:

Spent the past few weeks working on a mock draft simulator for @BleacherNation! Gave my first @BN_Bears mock a try, might try and sim some @BN_Blackhawks and @BN_Bulls lotteries next and try to land #1 overall! t.co/HkEhwYCAaI pic.twitter.com/IVta0N13U5

— Matthew Rooney (@mrooney23) April 15, 2026 Sidebar: I’m really proud of Matt for putting this together. I know he has been working hard on it, and it is nice to see someone’s hard work pay off in something that looks good and works in a functional way. Another day, another pundit opining that the Bears should trade up. Via Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports:

The Bears’ breakout season was one of the top storylines of 2025, but they have significant work to do to keep the arrow pointing upward in 2026. For that to happen, we recommend a slight trade up: nothing massive, but perhaps enough to get them ahead of the other defense-hungry teams in front of them, such as Philadelphia and maybe Los Angeles and Dallas. The Bears will be focused on safety (Dillon Thieneman? Emmanuel McNeil-Warren?) or a bevy of second-tier EDGE defenders. They have an extra second from the DJ Moore trade.

I don’t hate the idea of trading up. In theory, I love the concept of getting your guy and adding an impact player who can be a game-changer upon arrival. HOWEVER, I’m not sure who that player is, and I’m not sure it is a safety. To be clear, I’m open to a trade-up — and not just because I know it would make for tremendous content. It is just tough for me to see it happening unless all of the right bounces go Chicago’s way. Las Vegas Raiders General Manager John Spytek says teams have asked about the availability of the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. I wonder what the mock draft simulator says it would cost for the Bears to move up to that spot. Even if there was a reasonable price, what would Chicago even do with the pick? Would Ohio State edge rusher Arvell Reese be the pick? What about Texas Tech’s top edge David Bailey? Is Miami’s Francis Mauigoa a future lockdown left tackle? Would you be down to see Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love or Ohio State wideout Carnell Tate join the offense? I’m glad this isn’t a decision this team has to make. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images If you’re wondering why this draft doesn’t have the buzz that others have had, Jonathan Jones (CBS Sports) explains:

The reason there is no juice around this draft is simple: there is one quarterback. That position makes this world go round, and we have known since January that the Raiders will take Fernando Mendoza No. 1 overall.

The lack of talk about this draft has nothing to do with NIL or the draft being in Pittsburgh or current world events. When there aren’t QBs to discuss at the top, you don’t usually discuss much. The 2022 draft was very similar to this one, if you recall.

Maybe we get some fireworks before Thursday night, but it is not hard to understand why this draft has a low pulse right now.

To take it a step further: Another reason this draft doesn’t have juice is that the Bears aren’t picking in the top-10. Even if I remove my biases, the reality is that NFL writers, reporters, content creators, pundits, and pretty much everyone with a platform know that talking about Chicago’s football team generates engagement — for better or worse. New Bears safety Coby Bryant is right:

This tuff! Lol t.co/iyFuZfUFpH

— Coby Bryant (@_CobyBryant_) April 15, 2026 HOT TAKE ALERT: Defensive backs wearing single digits on their jerseys look good. On the right wide receiver, it looks solid, too. I’m still waiting for the Bears to allow someone to wear No. 0. That would look “tuff” in its own right. Who wants the distinction of being the first player in franchise history to rock 0 on their chest? Bears players wearing single digits as of right now: CB Jaylon Johnson (1), S Coby Bryant (2), RB D’Andre Swift (4), CB Kyler Gordon (6), K Cairo Santos (8), and WR Jahdae Walker (9). A reminder that 3, 5, and 7 are retired, which explains why those numbers aren’t being used.

Miami Dolphins GM Jon-Eric Sullivan says that star running back De’Von Achane is not available in trade talks and instead is angling for an extension. I’m not sure what a running back extension does for a team starting a rebuild. But I do know that saying that your star player is “not available for trade” and publicly declaring your desire for an extension is often used to boost trade value.
