Two teenagers were shot while at a bus stop outside of a YMCA and high school in Chicago on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Around 3:23 p.m., a 16-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were standing outside at a bus stop on the 6300 block of South Stony Island Avenue when an unidentified suspect pulled out a gun and fired shots at both of the teens, authorities said.
The boy was shot multiple times and transported to a local hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition, according to authorities. The girl was shot in the leg and also transported to a local hospital, where she was initially listed in good condition.
Police were blocking traffic on South Stony Island at 63rd Street for an investigation as of 4:40 p.m.
The shooting occurred outside of the South Side YMCA, located at 6630 S. Stony Island Ave., and across the street from Hyde Park Academy High School, located at 6220 S. Stony Island Ave. The soon-to-open Obama Presidential Center is just a couple blocks north, located at 6001 S. Stony Island Ave.
University of Chicago’s “UChicagoSafe” X account shared an alert about the shooting.
Detectives are continuing to investigate.
