The Chicago Cubs have a lot of hot hitters in the minor leagues right now, and outfield prospect Kevin Alcantara is certainly among the toastiest.
Last night, he went deep TWICE, giving him seven dingers already on the young season:

— Iowa Cubs (@IowaCubs) April 14, 2026Alcantara is now hitting .255/.345/.745/170 wRC+ with 7 homers in 58 plate appearances. The 34.5% K rate is obviously not good, but he’s making such obscenely high-quality contact (and walking 12.1% of the time) that is more than makes up for it. Still something to keep an eye on, though.
Given his status as a top prospect who is currently raking and plays great defense, I understand that there will be calls to get him up to the big league team to provide a spark at a position (right field) that has intermittently suffered from a combination of poor offense and defense.
With Seiya Suzuki back, even though he’s getting rest days and DH days, I don’t know that the Cubs will be rushing to get Kevin Alcantara up. Even with his minor league surge, he’d probably be behind Matt Shaw and Michael Conforto on the depth chart for a while, and would he stay hot if he were getting in just a couple plate appearances per week against MLB pitching? I’m not saying that’s what I would CHOOSE to do with him, mind you, I’m just saying that is how it seems like it would play out.
Throw in the fact that the elevated strikeout rate at Iowa would no doubt get worse in the big leagues, and it’s not as if there aren’t still things Kevin Alcantara can be working on in Triple-A.
That is all to say, I tend to think we’ll see Alcantara continue starting at Iowa until and unless one of two things happens: (1) there is another injury or two at the big league level, and/or (2) the performances on the big league team (the ones implicated in right field) fall off so dramatically and for so long that the Cubs have no choice but to force the issue in June or so.
