Communities in the southeast suburbs may notice a “strong odor” of rotten eggs or a skunk-like smell Tuesday as officials work to fix a chemical pipeline leak.
Will County Emergency Management posted a community alert about the leak Tuesday morning, saying the smell was reported in Monee and University Park.
“A pipeline leak involving mercaptan has been reported near Hamilton & Bond in University Park,” officials said. “Residents in the area may notice a strong outdoor odor. This is expected and not harmful at outdoor levels.”
Outdoor exposure to the smell at low levels is not harmful, officials said. Smelling it inside however could indicate a “dangerous buildup.”
“If you smell the odor inside your home, business, or workplace, leave immediately,” officials said, adding that residents should call 911. “Do not use open flames or anything that could create a spark if odor is present indoors.”
Mercaptan is a chemical added to natural gas to give it a distinct smell, the agency said. It’s often described as “rotten eggs or skunk-like.”
Since natural gas is normally odorless, the chemical is added to help people more quickly detect leaks.
“This odor is a safety feature designed to protect you,” the agency said.
Emergency responders and contractors were actively monitoring the situation.
