A wife’s service to her husband is not a religious obligation: Al-Azhar professor ...Egypt

News by : (EGYPT INDEPENDENT) -

A Professor of Islamic Law and Comparative Jurisprudence at Al-Azhar University, Ahmed Karima, addressed some common misconceptions about marital relationships.

Many of these more common ideas require a jurisprudential review to align with contemporary realities, he noted.

The professor stressed that Islamic jurisprudence does not explicitly obligate the wife to serve her husband as a religious duty, considering that what is happening in this context is closer to custom and understanding between the spouses, and not a religious obligation.

Cooperation, not Coercion

Karima explained that the foundation of the marital relationship is affection and not the forced imposition of roles.

Marriage must based on cooperation between spouses in order to achieve family stability.

Islam is not limited to performing rituals but represents a comprehensive way of life that regulates its various aspects, he emphasized.

He called for adopting a more moderate understanding that considers the development of society and its needs.

Family matters fall under transactions, he said, which opens the door for jurisprudential interpretation, allowing for the development of legal perspectives in accordance with changing times without deviating from fundamental principles.

Inspiration from the Prophet’s Life

Karima cited the life of the Prophet Muhammad, pointing out that he participated in household affairs, reflecting a model based on cooperation within the family rather than dependence on one person.

He criticized some shortcomings in contemporary homes, especially when both spouses work, emphasizing the importance of achieving fairness in the distribution of responsibilities to suit each family’s circumstances.

Renewing religious discourse

He emphasized the need to renew religious discourse on family issues, so that it is based on the objectives of Islamic law, such as justice and mercy, thus contributing to building family relationships based on understanding rather than conflict.
