Carson Kelly’s walk-off hit and Michael Busch’s game-tying hit will necessarily get most of the attention when there’s a big comeback, walk-off win, but I just wanted to make sure to spotlight the incredible day Dansby Swanson had. He, too, was critical to the Cubs coming back.
For one thing, he started the comeback all by himself with his solo homer in the 3rd:

— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) April 12, 2026It’s been another hard-luck start to the year for Swanson, whose contact quality is just about everything you want to see, but he’s hitting .163/.311/.306/86 wRC+. Hopefully he keeps doing what he’s been doing, and the results will follow in a larger sample.

— ?????? ???? (@TheConnorPils) April 12, 2026Outside of the home run, Swanson was also a master on the base paths in the win. Twice, he juuuuust about stole an extra run by scoring from third when other guys may not have tried or been situationally aware enough to take advantage.
This is NOT a traditional sac fly:

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 12, 2026Knowing the situation and the wind, Dansby Swanson simply stayed ready to tag just in case something crazy happened on the play. Which, of course, is exactly what happened, with Brandon Lowe falling to the ground after making the catch.
Then, you had Swanson quickly looking behind himself on Michael Busch’s bloop hit, knowing that he could at least try to score from first on the throw in from the outfield, again, if something crazy happened:

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 12, 2026And what do you know, something crazy DID happen. The throw got away, and Swanson was ready to break for home immediately.
I’m sure Dansby Swanson appreciates and respects his base coaches, but he wants to be out there with his eyes up, ready and trusting his instincts, because that can move a lot faster than a coach can tell you to go:

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 12, 2026Always be ready at third base in case something happens? Check.
Get to third quickly and look back behind you on the throw? Check.
These aren’t necessarily complicated things, but they also aren’t necessarily things that every guy is out there doing consistently just in case a rare opportunity comes where you can take advantage. But Dansby Swanson is, and it helped the Cubs come back. It also probably helps the Cubs as they continue to try to instill that kind of culture among their players.
I think that’s what I like most about Swanson’s running plays. Probably 49 out of 50 times on BOTH of those plays, he would not be able to score. So, if you never did the heads up things, you would probably look like you were right 49 out of 50 times. But Swanson does it every time, and it just so happened that twice, in a single game, it really mattered. His teammates see that. The younger players learn from it. They start to really absorb and internalize the idea that you have to be out there doing the right things every single moment of every single game, even when the payoff doesn’t arrive – because sometimes it does, and sometimes it wins the team a game.
