Day one of a new era… right?
Last night, on the final day of the 2025–26 NBA regular season, the Dallas Mavericks hosted the Chicago Bulls and ended Chicago’s season with a loss. Before we sit back and look back at what happened this season, let’s first start focusing on what’s next.
While the rest of the league is locked in on the playoffs, the Bulls should be moving, maybe under the radar, keeping an eye on players they want in free agency, watching film on draft prospects, and evaluating everything from the front office to possibly a new head coach.
Let’s talk Bulls basketball.
© Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images The Chicago Bulls took one final L last night in Dallas, number 51 on the season. And, honestly, a much-needed one. It ended in a 21-point loss to the Dallas Mavericks, about as one-sided as it gets. And while the stakes for winning weren’t exactly high, there was still a performance worth highlighting. Rob Dillingham finished with a team-high 25 points, just one shy of his career-high, which he set less than a week ago against the Washington Wizards. It marks only his second 20+ point game, but he’s quietly put together some solid performances to close out his first “half-season” in Chicago. Even rookie Lachlan Olbrich put up his first ever career triple-double in his just his second ever start for the Bulls.Lachlan Olbrich secures his first NBA triple-double for his career ? pic.twitter.com/nNj2mdHCho
— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) April 13, 2026 Will it change the Bulls’ draft strategy? Most definitely not. But it’s intriguing enough to keep their names in the back of your mind when those “future conversations” start coming up. With it being the final game of the season, not many questions in the press conference were about the game itself or matchups. It was more about reflecting on the season, and what comes next. While there’s a full Billy Donovan postgame press conference to get through (stay tuned), there’s one part that stands out: his upcoming meeting with the Reinsdorfs.“I had spoken to Michael and I had spoken to Jerry, and both guys said they wanted to sit down and get together and talk,” Billy said. “Tomorrow I am going to spend time with the players… My guess is [the meeting] will be sometime this coming week, yes.”
So, there should be clarity on Billy’s decision, and the direction the Chicago Bulls are heading, as soon as this week. The question now: is this final meeting with the players a farewell, or just part of the process? We’ll know sooner rather than later."My guess is it will be sometime this coming week, yes."? — CHGO Bulls (@CHGO_Bulls) April 13, 2026 Noa Essengue, the Chicago Bulls’ first-round pick, spent just three minutes on the court this season, with the rest of his year coming from the sidelines as he recovered from shoulder surgery. He also shared his own reflection on the year:“I think it was a tough year, obviously,” said the 19-year-old Frenchman. “I think it’s just helped me to understand the game, and when you’re on the bench, you see way more than when you’re on the court… Get my shoulder ready for next season and work on every aspect of my game.”
It was a tough season for Noa, but in his defense, it could’ve been a lot worse. After a Summer League that didn’t do him any favors from a PR standpoint, including ending up on the wrong side of a poster dunk, anything less than what players drafted after him were doing was always going to put him in the firing line. He’s still young, in a new country, and honestly received a bit of a blessing in disguise, out of the limelight, able to settle in at his own pace and work on his game. There are no guarantees he becomes a star. But there’s also no guarantee he won’t. And next season, he’ll get a fresh start and a chance to prove it.“I think it’s just helped me to understand the game…when you’re on the bench you see way more than when you’re on the court.” – Bulls F Noa Essengue on missing a majority of his rookie year to shoulder surgeryEssengue is expected to return to the court for Summer League pic.twitter.com/w8KiS22jGh
— Bulls on CHSN (@CHSN_Bulls) April 12, 2026 On the Chicago Sky side of things, they’re fully in the swing of their offseason, making moves left, right, and center. Their newest acquisition: DiJonai Carrington, the 2024 Most Improved Player and an All-Defensive team member, added to what’s starting to look like a pretty stacked lineup. After two straight seasons missing the WNBA playoffs, it at least feels like they’re trying to push toward competitive basketball again. That said, Carrington’s deal is just for one year, so maybe this is more of a “try it, then buy it” situation? Either way, the window feels short and maybe the pressure’s on?Breaking: DiJonai Carrington has agreed to a one-year deal to join the Chicago Sky, sources tell ESPNThe 2024 MIP & first-team all-defensive pick joins a Sky team that in the last week also acquired/re-signed Skylar Diggins, Rickea Jackson, Courtney Vandersloot & Azurá Stevens pic.twitter.com/yikgFeIube
