16-year-old Christopher Montana of Trinity Grammar was one of tonight’s highlights, with the athlete erasing his own Aussie National Age Record en route to capturing the boys’ 50m breaststroke title.
First off in the heats, Montana put up a stellar swim of 28.32 to claim the top seed. That time checked in as a new lifetime best and age record, slicing .06 off his previous PB of 28.38 put on the books at the 2025 New South Wales State Age Championships.
Come tonight’s final, however, and Montana entered an entirely new gear, smashing a time of 27.84 to clear the 28-second barrier for the first time in his young career.
He dominated the field en route to gold, with Diesel Williams next to the wall over a second later in 28.98. Benjamin Tan of Singapore rounded out the podium in 29.03.
With plenty of performances yet to come for young Montana, his time tonight already falls just .32 shy of inserting him into the list of the Australian men’s all-time top 10 performers in this event.
