ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester’s average gas price rose to $4.18 per gallon on Monday, as the U.S. Navy prepares to block ships from passing through the Strait of Hormuz amid the war with Iran.
Rochester’s average remains higher than the national average, $4.13 per gallon on Monday, according to AAA’s latest report. While the national average has risen by 1 cent since last Monday, Rochester’s average has risen by 14 cents. It comes as the war with Iran enters a seventh week.
Overall, Rochester has seen the sharpest spike in gas prices since March of 2022, during the pandemic era, which is impacting consumer behavior. News10NBC has spoken with people who are choosing to drive less and to stay home for vacations because of the high gas prices. It’s also been hard on drivers who use their own cars for work.
Why is the U.S. blockading the Strait of Hormuz?
As News10NBC has covered, Iran’s military has taken control of the Strait of Hormuz as leverage during the war, since 20% of the world’s oil passes through the waterway. That’s sent oil prices soaring worldwide. You can see where the rest of the world’s oil supply travels in this story.
Trump hopes that, by controlling the waterway, the U.S. would stop oil tankers from entering Iranian ports, cutting off a major source of revenue for the Iranian government. The blockade announcement came after ceasefire talks between the U.S. and Iran failed over the weekend.
Reports indicate that ships have stopped moving through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. The blockade officially begins at 10 a.m. U.S. Central Command said the blockade would involve all ships entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas. The Navy plans to allow ships traveling between non-Iranian ports to pass through the waterway.
Rochester’s average compared with the rest of the state
Rochester’s average is higher than the state average, which is $4.13 per gallon, the same as the national average. Rochester’s average is also four cents higher than Syracuse’s average and two cents higher than Buffalo’s average.
