ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Less than 24 hours after a loss, the Rochester Knighthawks visited Dick’s House of Sport to give kids a lacrosse clinic.
Ground ball drills, shots on goal and maybe just some X’s and O’s filled the day. Ryan Smith, an alternate captain with Rochester, was one member of the Knighthawks teaching kids lacrosse.
“Saying hi to a bunch of the kids already and taking a couple of balls off the shins and calves. So it’s fun,,” Smith said.
Connor Fields, the NLL’s reigning MVP, said the clinic helped ease the sting of the previous night’s loss to the Buffalo Bandits, 12-6.
“I think it always helps make a loss a little bit better coming out here and being with the community who supports us,” Fields said.
Ryan Crosby, the Assistant Store Manager of Experiences at the House of Sport, said the store is fortunate to have partners like the Knighthawks. “We’re really fortunate here in Rochester where we just have a lot of partners that like to activate in this way. So we were able to do really cool things like this,” Crosby said.
For these kids, pro lacrosse never seemed like a potential career.
“If you asked me a long time ago, I would have said no,” said Ryland Rees, who is in his sixth season with the Knighthawks.
“It was always a dream for me. Not a reality,” Smith said.
“No, it’s something you always dream of growing up,” Fields said.
The clinic put their careers and their sport into perspective. Fields said seeing the kids at games and watching them play is special.
“Super cool. It’s fun seeing them when they’re at the games. It’s fun seeing them when they’re out here playing. So, I’m just so appreciative of this game and for all it’s given me and continues to give me,” Fields said.
“It’s just kind of why we do it. I remember being in their shoes and doing these types of things. And this is what kind of creates that passion for lacrosse,” Rees said.
The 6-10 Knighthawks will play their two final games of the regular season this weekend with a home-and-home against the Georgia Swarm beginning on Saturday in Duluth, Georgia before returning to Rochester for their home finale on Sunday, April 19.
