News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A suspect has been charged with first-degree murder in the January shooting death of a U.S. Army veteran in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood.

According to Chicago police, Jonathan Roldan was arrested Thursday and faces charges in the shooting death of 30-year-old Andrew Garay, who was shot to death in late January.

Prosecutors say Garay was sitting in a parked vehicle in the 3500 block of West Wabansia on January 23 when a suspect approached his vehicle.

It is alleged Roldan fired a single shot, striking Garay in the head, before fleeing the scene.

Garay was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chicago police.

Prosecutors say they used cellular data to link Roldan to the crime scene, and he was taken into custody as he left his home Thursday.

According to his family, Garay was a U.S. Army veteran who had worked as a military police officer. He had been working as a delivery driver while working toward becoming a Chicago police officer, his family said.

He is survived by his mother and father, along with a young daughter.

Garay was expected to appear in court Sunday for a pretrial detention hearing.
