Manchester City sent a message to their title rivals with an impressive display and comfortable win over Chelsea that puts them right back in contention for the Premier League title.

They came into the game needing a win to increase the pressure on league leaders, Arsenal, who had lost at home to Bournemouth on Saturday. Anything else would have let the Gunners off the hook for their slip-up.

And a below-par performance in the first half, in which City created very little and looked all too lacking in ideas creatively, may have left manager Pep Guardiola concerned that this would turn out to be another missed opportunity for his side. There have already been a few of those this season.

But whatever the Spaniard said to his players at half-time worked wonders, because City blitzed Chelsea with three goals in 17 minutes at the start of the second half to storm to victory and power their way back into the title race.

Nico O’Reilly, the hero in last month’s EFL Cup final victory over Arsenal, popped up in the middle to head Rayan Cherki’s inviting cross into the net and set City on their way. It was his sixth goal in his last 10 appearances for City in all competitions. Excluding penalties, João Pedro is the only Premier League player who has scored more goals in that time (seven) than O’Reilly.

Shortly afterwards, City took a short corner, and Cherki danced around the Chelsea defence on the edge of the area before flicking a clever pass into Marc Guéhi, who turned and finished into the corner of the net like prime Erling Haaland to double City’s lead. It took Cherki to double figures for assists in the Premier League this season, with 10, clear in second place behind only Bruno Fernandes (16). He became the first player to register 10+ assists in their debut Premier League season since Dimitri Payet in 2015-16 (12).

Jérémy Doku, who was a menace to Chelsea’s defence throughout, then put the result beyond doubt by robbing Moisés Caicedo in midfield, charging into the box and firing low and hard into the bottom corner.

In what felt like no time at all, the game was over. City had taken full advantage of Arsenal’s defeat to move to within six points of the leaders. They also have a game in hand and will face Arsenal at the Etihad next Sunday. If they win both of those games, they’ll go level on points with the Gunners, so this three-goal victory will have done wonders for their goal difference, which is now only three worse than their title rivals.

For Chelsea, this was yet another disappointing day following a string of poor recent results. Liam Rosenior’s side have lost four of their last five league games, and their hopes of rescuing this season now rest on their FA Cup campaign and their dwindling chances of finishing in the Premier League’s top five. They have now lost back-to-back Premier League games by 3+ goals for the first time since February 2018 under Antonio Conte.

City are still in the FA Cup, too, and this win will only increase their chances of winning the domestic treble they are chasing. They appear, not for the first time under Guardiola, to be hitting form as the season enters its final few weeks.

The title race is in their hands now, but the Opta supercomputer still rates them as huge outsiders. Their title chances shot up dramatically from under 3% before the weekend, but they are still only rated at 12.7% after this win.

The truth is that there are still a lot of hurdles for City to navigate. Next Sunday at the Etihad is absolutely massive.
