Alabama Law gets lowest ranking in at least 13 years from U.S. News ...Middle East

U.S. News and World Report gave the University of Alabama School of Law its lowest ranking in at least 13 years in its 2026 rankings released this week. Alabama Law fell from No. 31 in 2025 to No. 40 this year.

The decrease continues a downward trend for the law school, which was ranked as high as No. 21 in 2013.

The rankings consider a school’s academics and its graduates’ success. In particular, U.S. News weighs graduate outcomes 10 months after graduation, first time and ultimate bar passage rate, assessments from legal professionals and deans and faculty at peer schools, selectivity of admissions, student to faculty ratio, and student to librarian ratio. The methodology changed in 2023.

Wendell Allen, the hiring partner at the Birmingham office of Bradley, a national law firm, said rankings are a helpful guideline for recruiting, particularly when schools consistently rank highly.

The drop in rankings from last year, Allen said, doesn’t make much of a difference for recruitment.

“Our view of a law school doesn’t swing with the rankings in the ranking services. We have good experience with the law schools. We know the type of students that they produce, where the rankings are just one factor to take into account,” he said.

Alabama Law, Allen noted, is “academically strong,” and he said summer clerks at his firm from the school consistently perform highly. Allen is a 1998 graduate of the law school.

“Being amongst the top 20 to 40 law schools year over year reflects the strength of the law school’s faculty, its student body and the performance of its law students once they become lawyers,” he said.

The decline comes even as admission to Alabama Law has grown more competitive. According to data from the American Bar Association, the median undergraduate GPA for the school rose from 3.76 for 2015’s first year class to 3.97 for the 2025 class. Over the same period, the median score on the LSAT admission test rose from 163 to 167. The LSAT is scored out of 180.

Despite the drop in overall ranking from 2025, other indicators improved for the school over last year. In the U.S. News ranking for law schools with the most graduates in federal clerkships, Alabama Law rose from No. 11 to No. 7. Federal clerkships are prestigious, usually short-term positions under federal judges, and law graduates typically take them early in their careers.

Allen said he’s seen the law school’s standing with employers increase since he graduated. He said the school is “highly regarded” across the country, with employers from outside the Deep South now recruiting at Alabama Law routinely.

“Alabama students are highly sought after by all of our offices, so we think very highly of the law students that come out of the law school,” he said of his firm.
