Key observations from Alabama football’s A-Day scrimmage ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Alabama football held its annual A-Day scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The team took part in 16 series of game-like action, which provided fans a chance to observe the Crimson Tide in person for the first time this spring. Here are the key storylines that emerged from the scrimmage.

Russell stars among quarterbacks

Four Alabama quarterbacks saw time under center on Saturday, but redshirt freshman Keelon Russell stood out amongst the foursome. Russell completed 21 of 33 attempts for 240 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception.

Redshirt junior Austin Mack led the team onto the field and commanded its first offensive series before Russell took over on the following two possessions. Mack and Russell saw split time for much of the scrimmage until late on.

Mack led the first red zone drive, but it was Russell who anchored the final five series the Crimson Tide took part in from inside the 20. He led four scoring drives, including two touchdown passes to true freshman wideout Cederian Morgan and redshirt freshman receiver Derek Meadows.

Following the scrimmage, head coach Kalen DeBoer said that Mack was dealing with an injury. He added that Mack “will be fine” despite the injury limiting him Saturday.

True freshman signal-callers Jett Thomalla and Tayden-Evan Kaawa each led a drive, with each completing four of five pass attempts. Both Thomalla and Kaawa’s drives ended in a 47-yard field goal from transfer kicker Lorcan Quinn.

Offensive line rotation

Alabama returned just one starter from last season on its offensive line in sophomore Michael Carroll. Still, the team seemed to have found its first-team unit, as it trotted out the same five first-team linemen from start to finish on Saturday:

Left tackle Jackson Lloyd, left guard Mal Waldrep Jr., center Racin Delgatty, right guard Michael Carroll and right tackle Jayvin James.

Carroll played all but two snaps at right tackle last season, but has slotted over to right guard this spring. He said after A-Day that while he came to Alabama planning to play tackle, changing positions was what he had to do to help his team win.

“We have to have a run game,” Carroll said.

New kids on the block make noise

Several true freshmen stood out during the scrimmage, including Morgan, running back Trae’shawn Brown, defensive back Jorden Edmonds and defensive back Zyan Gibson.

Edmonds and Gibson broke up passes, while Morgan hauled in a 36-yard gain early on in the scrimmage and caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Russell late in red zone play.

Fellow wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams said that the team calls Morgan “the Gulf of Mexico.”

“You throw it in there, he’s going to catch it,” Coleman-Williams said. “He’s got plenty of space.”

Brown’s emergence has been a storyline throughout spring practice, and the Huntsville, Texas, native continued the strong start to his Alabama career on Saturday. Brown saw action on the ground and through the air, including turning two consecutive checkdowns into double-digit gains.

“He’s making people miss,” defensive back Dijon Lee Jr. said of Brown. “He’s been putting that work in the weight room, so it’s kind of hard to bring him down.”

Alabama will conclude spring practice next week with two final practices. It will return to the practice field at the end of July for fall camp.
