Jim Dudley, author of “Recruitment and Retention of Generation Z Police Officers,” says one of the things that sets younger recruits apart is that they’re looking for diverse opportunities.
Dudley says one way departments can offer that is showcasing some of the different roles, like working in a crime center, using drones or working with analytics. He also says departments need to take advantage of tools like social media when it comes to recruiting, not just by advertising their openings.
Dudley says he notices recruits tend to have a fear of failure, and it’s on the departments to let them know they’ll provide the resources to help them succeed. He says he has spoken with RPD recruitment officer Justin Collins in the past and says he believes RPD is recruiting the right way.
“He’s really got a cadre of associates in the city of Rochester that are helping these kids along. And I say kids, but they’re junior high, high school, maybe the first year of college. And he’s really building something where he’s he is bringing them into the culture. He is showing them the work ethic of being on time, of learning skills and teamwork and all of that,” Dudley said.
Declan was told by Dudley that the staffing shortages isn’t just a Rochester issue — it’s impacting departments across the country. The deadline to register for the RPD written exam is midnight on Sunday.
