A woman was shot while riding a CTA bus when a man pulled out a gun on the street and fired shots at the bus on Friday afternoon, police said.
The shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. near South King Drive and East Pershing Road in Bronzeville, just down the street from Phillips Academy High School as students were let out for the day.
A man who has yet to be located by authorities pulled out a gun and fired shots in the area, authorities said. A 37-year-old woman on a CTA bus was shot in the leg.
She was taken to a local hospital where she was initially listed in good condition, authorities said.
A witness told NBC Chicago that he saw a man shoot in the direction of the bus before running away. The witness, a Marine veteran, ran after the shooter in an attempt to stop him, he said, but was unsuccessful.
Aerial footage of the aftermath captured by NBC Chicago Sky5 showed police tape wrapped around a CTA bus as officers investigated.
As of 6 p.m., Pershing Road was still blocked as authorities investigate.
A bullet struck the witness’s neighbor’s house, leaving behind a bullet hole.
The witness said he doesn’t recall seeing any argument but believed other people were involved – though that information has not been confirmed by police.
Police are still looking for the suspect.
